This picture demonstrates how arbitrary human eating practices can be in regards to meat. Why do we eat pig and not cat? Well for me, I think the cat has too much fur.

  1. After reading the caption, I instantly thought about my upbringing. I lived in a home where we always had dogs and cats as pets, and never did we have a pig as a pet. Therefore, I could never picture myself eating a cat because I grew up with them and I treated them as family. I feel that this has to do with the way a person was brought up. As for me I have ate pig, but never cat, but I do have friends who have had pigs as pets and cannot picture eating a pig.

  2. This comes up a lot. Humans justifications for eating certain animals and not others is completely arbitrary. For instance pigs are just as smart as dogs and actually possess the mental capacity of a human child yet people often dismiss them as "food." I find when people know certain animals on a deeper level they are uncomfortable to think of them as food. There's a great interview with the author of "Farm Sanctuary" Gene Baur on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart where he talks about the idea behind far sanctuaries and how once people know an animals name it's harder for them to eat them. I think this is a great strategy to get people to rethink their food choices.

  3. I agree with Deseary. I think that it has to do with the way we were brought up. If you have a certain pet I don't think we would want to eat them. I always had dogs as pets and never pigs, I would not want to eat dog but I would eat bacon. I would personally not feel comfortable eating an animal that I have had as a pet.
